LAKE LOUISE

We’re going to be talking a lot about spring skiing in Snow Scene, this week and for the foreseeable future. It’s just what happens when the temperatures start hitting double digits.

At Lake Louise, it might feel like spring, but it definitely still looks like winter. The mountain has been getting consistent snow for a month now, at least, and with 19 cm of fresh powder falling in the last week the season total is now 459 cm.

With that said, the spring vibes have definitely arrived and that means skiers and riders might take a little extra time on the patio. That’s the idea behind the Temple Lodge Takeover, which has DJs, a (snow) beach volleyball court and lots more going every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Temple Lodge until April 6.

SUNSHINE VILLAGE

There’s legitimately so much going on at Sunshine Village this month and that’s generally going to be true right up until the end of the season, which is scheduled for late-May.

We’ll be chatting about their spring plans in the coming weeks in Snow Scene, but for now we’d like to draw everyone’s attention to the Legend of the Village event, which is going down from March 20-24. It’s an invitation-only park event hosted by Snowboy Productions and is an opportunity for everyone to check out what some of the best snowboarders around do in a unique build.

Conditions are still great at Sunshine, too. With 17 cm of snow blanketing the mountain in the last week, the season total is now 421 cm.

NORQUAY

If you’re thinking you want to upgrade your ski or snowboard gear but would like to test it out before you commit, well, we think you’re very smart. Also, we think you should check out Norquay’s Demo Day on March 23, when representatives from some of the industry’s top brands will be on-site to give guests the low-down on new gear.

Norquay’s run of solid snow continued this week, too. After a massive snowfall in the first seven days of March, the Banff resort saw a further 12 cm fall from the sky over the past week. The season total is now 291 cm.

WINSPORT

With all this snow and the temperatures rising around Calgary, it’s the perfect time to get back outside and have some fun. If you happen to be the type of person who isn’t all that interested in skiing or snowboarding, well, I’d first of all question why you’ve read this far into our Snow Scene notes. But I don’t judge.

Secondly, I’d suggest checking out the Servus Tube Park at WinSport, which features some of the longest lanes in Western Canada. And from now until the end of the winter season, tickets are only $25.

NAKISKA

You’ve always got to remember that just because there’s no snow in Calgary, that doesn’t mean it’s the same story 45 minutes down the road at Nakiska.

That’s certainly the case right now. You’d look around the city and would probably think about golf, but make your way to the Kananaskis resort and you’d be greeted by a mountain that saw 40 cm of fresh snowfall in the past week. That brought the season total to 289 cm.

Also, the final Ladies Day of the season is March 27. Your day includes a lift ticket, a three-hour lesson, a gourmet lunch and an afternoon of skiing and riding with friends new and old.

PANORAMA

We’re just over a week away from Panorama’s first-ever Pride & Ski Festival, which goes from March 22-24 and features everything from guided snowshoe tours to an amazing race to wine and painting to a drag ball to … Well, they’re going all-out for their Pride festival at Panorama and it really does look like it’s going to be a tonne of fun.

Conditions on the mountain should be great, too. Panorama saw 12 cm of fresh powder over the past seven days and the season total is now sitting at 324 cm.

FERNIE

When Fernie goes retro, they really, really go all-in.

There’s music and there’s people dressing up in their best ‘80s ski gear … it’s a whole thing, and they just seem to go a little bit bigger at Fernie than they do anywhere else.

So we don’t mind being a bit early when we tell Snow Scene readers that they’ve got to make it a point to get out to Fernie’s Retro Weekend, which goes March 30 and 31 and features a full weekend of contests, parties and old-school fun.

Also, there’s a lot of snow. Has been for a while now. Fernie got blasted by 35 cm of fresh powder in the past week and the season total is an unreal 730 cm.

KICKING HORSE

I skied Kicking Horse on Saturday and was delighted to run into my Snow Scene partner-in-crime Al Charest while we were there. There’s not really much more to that story, honestly, but it happened and I was happy about it and now you know.

There is a lot going on at Kicking Horse, including the Steep Dreams Ski Mountaineering Festival. I personally have no interest in walking up a mountain before skiing down it, but I respect anyone who does want to do that. The event serves as the North American championships, so you know the athletes competing are really, really good at what they do.

Also, Kicking Horse got hit with 17 cm of new snow this week. The season total is 517 cm.

REVELSTOKE

If you’re going to Revelstoke any time soon, well, you’re probably well aware that conditions are pretty sick right now. It’s just sort of what you expect at the B.C. resort.

And this week is certainly no exception. The B.C. resort saw 48 cm of new snow in the past week and the season total is 776 cm.
