TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant Singtel has partnered with graphics processing unit (GPU) cloud platform, GMI Cloud, to expand GPU capacity across US and the Asia-Pacific region by combining the resources and infrastructure of both companies.

The move will democratise the availability of high-powered computing for enterprises, said the companies in a joint statement on Tuesday (Sep 3).

Singtel and GMI Cloud said their collaboration will extend their reach into previously untapped markets, enabling their customers to gain access to GPUs across a wider footprint for their workloads.

Based in the US, GMI Cloud provides cloud services to data centres by offering rapid access to GPUs that are optimised for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning workloads.

Its GPU platform is “known for its high-performance and cost-effective solutions” and will be integrated with Singtel’s Paragon orchestration platform to leverage the telecommunications provider’s Nvidia H100 Tensor Core GPU capacity in Singapore.

The collaboration comes as Singtel plans to launch its GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) later this year, and is expanding its network of Nxera data centres across Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.

“Collaborating with GMI Cloud expands capacity and availability zones in Asia Pacific, complementing our own GPUaaS points of presence. This will give enterprises the flexibility and scalability they need as they harness supercomputing power to accelerate innovation,” said Bill Chang, chief executive of Singtel Digital’s InfraCo and Nxera.

GMI Cloud chief Alex Yeh believes the company is uniquely positioned to support the telecommunications industry’s AI initiatives, given its flexible deployment models and experience with high-volume, low-latency workloads.

“Together, we’re creating an ecosystem that will accelerate AI adoption, enabling telecom providers and enterprises to enhance their services and drive innovation in the region,” added Yeh.

Other GPU cloud platforms which Singtel has announced partnerships with include Vultr in the US, and Nscale in Europe.

Singtel also recently announced a strategic partnership with Bridge Alliance – a mobile alliance of 35 member operators worldwide – that will bring its GPUaaS offerings to enterprises across the South-east Asian region.
