Cheering for your team to lose is bad sportsmanship. Just getting a No.-1 pick does not guarantee a winner. It would be nice to have a superstar on the ice but, face it, Edmonton has had numerous high picks over the last 30 years and exactly the same number of Stanley Cups as Calgary. Play your best, do your best and let the talking heads talk among themselves. Go, Flames, Go!

GARY BEATTY

(To tank or not to tank is a debate that has Flames fans split)

Nasty comments

Women should never have to put up with the vile or nasty comments Donald Trump flings towards female reporters. Calling them ‘piggy’ or ‘stupid’ in the open amongst other colleagues is the act of a fourth grader. This mindless president’s lack of respect and use of foul and demeaning language against others is repulsive and extremely inappropriate for the leader of any nation.

MARIA WEISS

(‘Piggy’ was pretty shocking, even for Trump)

So many obstacles

Why, when we talk about being a country, do we have so many groups that can stop things that are in the national interest from happening? Also, why don’t the provincial premiers ever consider other provinces? I hear from (Ontario Premier Doug) Ford all the time about what he needs help with, and the same from B.C., but no-one mentions the canola farmers who also need help. With pressure groups, Indigenous groups, provincial rights, etc., how will we ever get anything done?

ROSALIND MARY CONDRASHOFF

(In a country as vast and varied as Canada, complete buy-in is unlikely. Let’s mix wisdom with determination and let the chips fall where they may)

Guilbeault is gone

Well, some progress was made over the pipeline and at least the Liberal government scrapped most of the emission caps that were a millstone around the oil industry. But bigger news was that (Steven) Guilbeault the Great has resigned from his portfolio and took his ball and went home. No more climbing the political ladder, but who knows, the world could use another arborist. Good riddance.

KEN UHREN

(Guilbeault will not be missed by many around these parts)

Courting China

(Re: ‘Canada moving quickly to strengthen ties with China, according to Canadian Ambassador,’ calgarysun.com.) Is our prime minister out of his cotton-picking mind? Being a communist country, having close ties to both Russia and North Korea, Mark Carney is tip-toeing down a very dark path with China. It’s like building a house directly over San Andreas Fault without weighing-in on the consequences to such a preposterous move by Carney.

DONALD K. MUNROE

(That massive market can be awfully tempting)
