Broken country

We are living in a broken and corrupt country. Broken and corrupted by Liberal nonsense, lies, scandals and its inability to govern. Our Liberal government, living high on great salaries and benefits, is donating billions of taxpayers money to other countries for sometimes ridiculous reasons, while we have a crumbling economy; seniors who are still paying taxes trying to survive on $1,200/month, unable to afford food or shelter; homelessness out of control; an opioid crisis; a frustrated population unable to afford anything; armed forces members going to food banks; and a middle class disappearing faster than snow during a chinook. We have to go back to common sense and the prosperous country we once were.

MICHAL SOCH

(A little common sense goes a long way)

Alberta separatism

For the many of you who think Alberta separatism is the answer to your woes, you’re sadly mistaken. The Constitution of Canada does not permit unilateral secession and unilateral declarations of independence cannot succeed without international recognition of the new nation declared. Even if there were 50% of all Albertans who chose to separate, the other 50% would call upon Canada to protect them, their property, all federal property as well as all federal services for those individuals. Then we would have Indigenous people who likely would claim a right to remain in Canada. This would all be tied up in the courts for decades, much longer than most Albertans today would be alive.

(The process would not be as smooth as some would have us believe)

Risky business

Prime Minister Mark Carney cozying up to China is alarming, given their history of spying on Canada, interfering in our federal elections, jailing and executing our citizens, plus other very bad behaviour. If this is Carney’s idea of a new world order, we have every right to fear for the future.

(It comes with some risk, no doubt)

Buy Canadian

Our federal government has a Buy Canadian policy, while residents returning to Canada after a trip of 48 hours or more are still allowed up to $800 worth of duty-free exemptions of goods. It’s totally wrong that our government, which is spending billions of dollars to shore up Canadian businesses due to tariffs, still allows snowbirds and day-trippers exemptions while patriots at home are asked to buy Canadian for the good of the country, eh!

PETER J. MIDDLEMORE SR.

(Either way, more folks these days are, indeed, buying Canadian)
