Who Was Matthew Mitchell? Wealthy Texas Restaurateur Kills Pregnant Wife and Two Kids Before Turning Gun on Self in Horrific Murder-Suicide
A wealthy Texas restaurateur and former pharmaceutical CEO allegedly killed his pregnant wife and their two young children in a tragic murder-suicide, according to a report. Matthew Mitchell, 52, has been identified as the suspect in the horror murder-suicide, which unfolded Monday night in the upscale River Oaks area of Houston, the Daily Mail first reported.
Mitchell was found dead along with his pregnant wife, Thy Mitchell, 39, and their two young children, aged eight and four, inside their $1.2 million home. Authorities said all of them died from gunshot wounds and have identified Matthew as the suspect in the case. An investigation into the horror incident is still ongoing.

The couple owned the Houston restaurant Traveler’s Table, and Mitchell had previously served as CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development, according to his online biography. A publicist for the restaurant described Thy Mitchell as a “dear friend,” but said the family would not be releasing any public statements while the investigation is ongoing.
The Houston Police Department said officers were called to the home shortly after 5:26 p.m. on Monday for a welfare check. Authorities were alerted by a babysitter and a relative, who got concerned after not hearing from the family for more than a day.
They entered the home and found both parents and their two children dead inside, police said. The children, who were last seen on Sunday, were reportedly found in their beds, according to Fox26.
Authorities are treating the case as a murder-suicide but have not shared additional details about what they found at the scene. The incident has shaken the River Oaks community, one of the most affluent areas in Houston, known for its multi-million-dollar homes.
Motive Still Unclear

A neighbor, Cindy, who has lived in the area for 19 years, told Click2 that she had “never seen anything like this.” “We haven’t had these kinds of tragedies. We don’t have robberies,’ she said. ‘I shake for the little kids.”
According to his restaurant website biography, Mitchell studied in France and Italy, and also attended University of Oxford. Early in his career, Mitchell worked as a journalist in both London and New York City.
After returning to Texas, Mitchell enrolled at Rice University and moved into the pharmaceutical industry, eventually rising to become President and CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development.
He later co-founded the Houston restaurant Traveler’s Table with his wife Thy, who was also a restaurateur and served on the board of the Texas Restaurant Association.
In September 2025, the couple was named Restaurateurs of the Year in Houston.
