The high-profile fundraising event combined investment and sports star power

  • A lunch auction featuring Warren Buffett and Stephen Curry raised $9 million
  • Proceeds will support charitable and nonprofit initiatives
  • The event combined business and sports fundraising appeal
  • Buffett and Curry both highlighted philanthropy in post-event statements

A charity auction featuring a private lunch with Warren Buffett and Stephen Curry was bid for $9 million for charitable causes, organizers confirmed following the event.

The auction combined two globally recognized figures from business and sports, with proceeds directed toward nonprofit and community-focused initiatives supported through the fundraiser.

The event attracted international attention because of Buffett’s longstanding reputation as one of the world’s most influential investors and Curry’s profile as one of the NBA‘s most recognizable players.

The winning bid came in a weeklong auction on eBay ‌that ended on Thursday, according to eBay’s website. The winner’s identity could not immediately be determined.

Buffett, Curry, and his wife, Ayesha Curry, will join the winner and up to seven guests chosen by the winner on June 24 in Omaha, Nebraska, where Buffett’s conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway is based.

Proceeds will be divided between the Glide Foundation and Eat. Learn. Play. The nonprofits said Buffett will match the winning bid for each of them, boosting the total donation to about $27 million.

Buffett has participated in several high-profile charity lunch auctions over the years, many of which have generated millions of dollars for nonprofit organizations. His previous fundraising lunches often supported the GLIDE Foundation in San Francisco.

Glide is a nonprofit in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district that helps people who are poor, homeless, and battling substance abuse.

Buffett raised about $53.2 million for Glide in 21 auctions between 2000 and 2022.

He began supporting Glide after his first wife, Susan, volunteered ‌there. She died in 2004. The $19 million winning bid in the 2022 auction remains by far the largest in an eBay charity auction, eBay said.

Curry has also remained active in philanthropy through educational and community initiatives connected to his foundation work and NBA platform.

Eat. Learn. Play. was founded by Stephen and Ayesha Curry, and focuses on nutritious meals, childhood literacy, and maintaining physically active lifestyles.

In a statement released after the auction, Curry said, “It’s special when people come together to support causes that can create real opportunities for communities and young people.”

Buffett added, “Philanthropy works best when it inspires participation, and this event certainly did that.”

The $9 million total represents one of the largest publicly reported charity auction figures involving athlete and business collaborations.

Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, has increasingly expanded his involvement in media, education, and charitable initiatives beyond basketball in recent years.

Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, remains one of the most prominent figures in global finance and has pledged the majority of his wealth toward philanthropic causes.

Organizers said the funds raised from the event will support multiple charitable programs, though detailed allocation breakdowns were not immediately released publicly.
