Merlier wins again as Pogacar keeps Tour lead

  • Tim Merlier won Stage 8 in a bunch sprint to secure consecutive Tour de France victories
  • The Soudal Quick-Step rider outsprinted Biniam Girmay and Olav Kooij in Bergerac
  • Tadej Pogacar safely finished with the peloton to retain the yellow jersey
  • Pogacar continues to lead Jonas Vingegaard in the general classification heading into Stage 9

Tim Merlier continued his outstanding Tour de France campaign by claiming back-to-back sprint victories after winning Stage 8 on Saturday, while defending champion Tadej Pogacar comfortably retained the yellow jersey as the general classification remained unchanged.

The Belgian sprinter from Soudal Quick-Step timed his effort to perfection on the 180.4-kilometre route from Périgueux to Bergerac, producing another powerful late burst to edge out Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay and Dutch rider Olav Kooij in a high-speed bunch sprint.

Merlier’s latest triumph followed his victory in Bordeaux on Stage 7, making him the first rider in this year’s Tour to record consecutive stage wins and further cementing his status as the race’s standout sprinter.

The largely flat eighth stage was expected to end in a mass sprint, although the day’s breakaway briefly threatened to upset the sprinters’ plans. French rider Liam Slock spent much of the afternoon at the front before being reeled in by the peloton in the closing kilometres as the sprint teams took control of the race.

Soudal Quick-Step once again delivered a disciplined lead-out, positioning Merlier perfectly before the Belgian launched his decisive acceleration with approximately 400 metres remaining. Girmay attempted to respond but could not match Merlier’s top-end speed, while Kooij completed the podium after another consistent sprint performance.

Speaking after the finish, Merlier praised his teammates for their work throughout the stage.

“The team did an incredible job again today. They kept me protected all day and delivered me exactly where I needed to be. Finishing it off with another win is really special.”

The result marked another milestone in Merlier’s growing Tour de France résumé, giving him consecutive victories and strengthening his challenge for the points classification as the race heads deeper into its opening week.

While the battle for the stage honours unfolded at the front, the general classification contenders experienced a relatively calm day. UAE Team Emirates-XRG leader Tadej Pogacar safely crossed the finish line within the main peloton to preserve his overall advantage.

The Slovenian continues to lead the standings by 2 minutes and 42 seconds over two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard, with teammate Isaac del Toro remaining third overall after another solid ride.

With no significant climbs on the route, none of the leading contenders attempted to launch attacks, choosing instead to conserve energy ahead of the more demanding mountain stages scheduled later in the race.

Extreme temperatures again played a role throughout the stage, with riders battling another day of intense heat across southwestern France. Teams focused heavily on hydration and positioning as crosswinds threatened to split the peloton at various points, although the overall contenders avoided any major incidents.

Attention now turns to Stage 9, where another opportunity may await the sprinters before the race transitions into more selective terrain that could reshape the fight for the yellow jersey.

Pogacar, meanwhile, remains firmly in control of the overall standings, with his commanding advantage over Vingegaard leaving the defending champion well placed as the Tour approaches its first major mountain tests.
