As a statistician, I was taught that correlations do not necessarily reflect causation, however, recent data and trends challenge this theory. Government spending is up, the size of the public sector work force is up, taxes are increasing, inflation is high, homelessness is up, rents are increasing, crime is increasing, and unemployment is increasing. Now the root cause: Immigration continues to increase at unprecedented levels. So the solution is obvious to everyone except our politicians: Limit immigration for a while until we have the resources to support legal immigration which is the reason our country has been so successful.

(Wise words, but the current federal government is doing the opposite.  Let’s hope the next Conservative federal government gets us back on track.)

No to home tax

I understand that the Canadian government is considering levying more taxes when someone sells their home. Already, if I sell my home in Toronto, I pay the municipality and the province a “transfer tax” … and you want to make it worse. If I sell my home, I still have to buy another home … so these taxes shrink my ability to buy a new home. Taking more money from people who sold their homes will not help more Canadians buy homes. It makes no sense. Homes have to become cheaper. Prices for homes have to stay in line with incomes. And while you’re at it, immigration numbers have to stay in line with homes built.

(The Trudeau Liberals’ policies have been all over the place and where we are now has created massive pressure on our public services.)

Not a leader to be found

The disturbing recent political news involving Justin Trudeau’s denial of his fate, Donald Trump’s bombastic unsuitability for the presidency and Joe Biden’s mental deterioration doesn’t indicate that democracy is failing. Big-party democracy is failing.

The enablers and power-hungry back-roomers, who keep the inept in power, are the ones who must go — now. It is time to examine how we conduct our democracy and set new rules and standards. The power-hungry backroom manipulators must go!

David Woodley

(Throw in a little swamp to drain and you may be onto something.)
