I think the federal government should cancel the tariffs on EVs from China. A friend who lives in High River and works in Calgary bought one thinking it would save her money. In one month it cost her upwards of $600 in charging fees. After a month she returned it to the dealership and bought something more practical. If you wanted to drive to somewhere like even Edmonton you’d better be prepared to find a charger station along the way and add extra time to your trip — apparently it takes about a half-hour to fully charge the battery. God help you if you get delayed by an accident or bad weather. You pretty much have to plug in your vehicle every time you get home, even in the summer, or risk running out of juice. Canadians aren’t dumb. It won’t take long for them to realize how inefficient these vehicles are and not buy them. Meanwhile, China would drop the tariffs on our pork and canola products, greatly helping our farmers and to a large extent our economy. In short, electric vehicles don’t make sense in this country. Let the market decide what vehicles people buy.

JOHN HANCOCK

(Letting the market decide is a good default when you’re unsure)

Israel didn’t start it

As we are hopefully seeing the end of the Israel/Hamas war and the return of the remaining Israeli hostages, let’s not forget who started it. Hamas, the de-facto leadership of Gaza, attacked Israel. Had they not, there would not have been a war and thousands of lives would have been spared. Israel is not at fault here; they had no choice but to defend themselves and had to try to rid the world of a terrorist organization in Hamas. In WWII when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, they started a war with the U.S. they could not win and hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in the Pacific theatre. When Hamas attacked Israel, they, too, started a war they could not win and as a result thousands of Palestinians lost their lives. Let’s stop persecuting Israel for doing what any other country would have done under the same circumstances.

History lesson

I wish people would get their history straight! In 135CE the Roman Emperor Hadrian changed the name of Judea to Syria Palestinia because of his hatred towards the indigenous people there, the Jews. Palestine has never had any land or State in history, so get it right before you jump on the bandwagon and stand up for a two-state solution. Before you open your mouth, research the truth, then you can talk. But hurry before the facts of history are changed to meet today’s agenda.
