(Re: ‘Putin accuses Ukraine of drone attack on his residence, adding new obstacle to peace plan,’ calgarysun.com) I see the rabbits are starting to be pulled out of Putin’s top hat at record speed now. Any old excuse for the Russian president not to sign the peace agreement with Ukraine. But, it’s quite OK for Vladimir Putin to call on drone strikes inside Ukraine, killing innocent civilians.

DONALD K. MUNROE

(Tough to believe much of what the Russian president says with regard to Ukraine)

Aid with no oversight

Prime Minister Mark Carney has given Ukraine an additional $2.5 billion of economic aid, without any oversight or accountability. We only hope that President Zelenskyy uses his latest windfall responsibly, as we’ll never learn the truth. This is one of the many reasons that our taxes remain stubbornly high.

JOANNE and WAYNE MORCOM

(We don’t begrudge helping Ukraine, but accountability should be part of the deal)

Bad place to cut

#WinTheFight Canada pledged $1.02 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria at Johannesburg for the 8th Replenishment Summit. Sadly, this represents an almost 16% cut from Canada’s previous pledge in 2022. Results Canada, alongside more than 20 organizations, released a joint statement expressing our concerns. #BudgetForLeadership Despite much advocacy from many, the 2025 federal budget cut $2.7 billion over four years from our International Assistance Envelope.

MARNIE SHAW

(It was a curious move given what he said heading into the election)

Time for great debate

Thomas Lukaszuk, Keith Wilson has challenged you to debate Alberta independence with him. On a topic as important as this Albertans deserve to hear both sides. Do you agree? Ryan Jespersen has offered to host the debate live on his platform. Say yes and give Albertans the information to what may be the most important vote of their lifetime.

BILL GRANT

(Albertans are likely to hear much more from both sides in 2026)

Language of Trump

Although President Trump would doubtless benefit by having an editor review his comments before they are posted on Truth Social as Joe Rogan suggests, he is equally capable of making hateful or absurd comments in a live context. His follow-up comment to reporters that (Rob) Reiner was a “deranged person” was just as hateful. Trump’s recent statement, “Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed” shows that he uses language in a way not familiar to most people even when he is not being hateful. I hope one of his advisers tells him Russia wants Ukraine to succeed much in the same way Hitler wanted Poland to succeed in 1939. Just as people sometimes speak of negative growth, Trump may be thinking of negative success.

BRUCE COUCHMAN, Toronto

(Tough to imagine Trump heeding the warning of an editor advising him to dial it back)

Opt for 9-1-1

My condolences to the Sreekumar family. Here is lots of AHS bashing, by all media outlets. Allow me to advise of my experiences. On Oct. 06, 2023, while driving to work I experienced high chest pressure, blurred vision and an upset stomach. I turned around and drove home, phoned 911. EMS arrived, did their diagnosis, and off to the Foothills Hospital we go. EMS advised the hospital staff of my condition, EMS stayed with me until the doctor relieved EMS. I was never left alone. I am sorry to say having an individual drive Mr. Sreekumar, with chest pains is not the preferred approach, phoning 911 would have been.

(Hindsight, in these cases, is often 20/20. Either way, eight hours in a waiting room is too much)
