Eric Roberts is shedding light on his family dynamics.
After offering an apology to sister Julia Roberts for his role in their years-long estrangement, the actor discussed his relationship with daughter Emma Roberts when asked to name the “toughest period” of his life.
“Probably the loss of relationship with my daughter,” the Dancing With the Stars contestant said on the Oct. 22 episode of the Inside of You podcast. “There’s not a pain, there’s a sadness for the, most likely, misunderstandings [that] I’ll have forever. Because we’re human.”
The Pope of Greenwich Village star welcomed Emma, now 33, with ex Kelly Cunningham in 1991 and went on to marry wife Eliza Roberts the following year. Amid his battle with addiction, he lost custody of his daughter, calling that the “biggest consequence” of his drug use in his memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far.
While Eric has been sober since 1995, he revealed he’s gained a new perspective on his “sadness” over Emma—who shares 3-year-old son Rhodes Robert Hedlund with ex Garrett Hedlund—in recent years.
