IU Issues Public Apology Amid ‘Perfect Crown’ Historical Inaccuracy Controversy as Fans Defend Her Online [CHECK OUT]

South Korean singer-songwriter and actress IU has publicly apologized following the growing controversy surrounding the K-drama Perfect Crown, which recently faced criticism over alleged historical inaccuracies.

The drama sparked heated online discussions after viewers pointed out several issues related to its portrayal of historical elements and cultural details. As backlash intensified, cast members, including IU, who played the lead role of Sung Hui Ju, became targets of criticism across social media and online communities.

Earlier, the singer-actress had already addressed the controversy during a special group-viewing event held for the drama’s finale. However, her comments at the time reportedly drew additional criticism from some viewers.

Most recently, IU shared a longer and more formal apology through her Instagram account, directly addressing concerns raised by audiences.

“Hello, this is IU, who played Sung Hui Ju in Perfect Crown. Over the past few days, I have carefully read all the comments left by viewers. I deeply apologize, and my heart remains heavy for failing to show a responsible attitude as the lead actor on this project and for the disappointment I caused,” she wrote.

The actress went on to acknowledge the criticism surrounding the drama’s historical depiction and admitted she should have approached the project with greater care.

“I deeply regret and apologize without any excuses for acting without giving deeper thought to the various historical inaccuracies in the drama that was pointed out.”

“Because this project was important for capturing imagination through our unique history and Korea’s traditional beauty, I should have studied the script with greater caution as an actor, and I am ashamed of myself for failing to do so. I apologize for not properly anticipating the issues beforehand.”

IU also thanked viewers who continued watching the series and shared their opinions despite the controversy.

“I thank everyone who watched the drama until the end and shared their unsparing feedback. I will always keep your valuable criticism and opinions in mind and will work harder to be an IU that approaches future projects with greater caution. I apologize once again.”

Despite the apology, reactions online remained divided. While some netizens continued to criticize the production, many others defended IU and questioned why the actress herself was bearing so much responsibility for issues related to the script and production decisions.

Supporters argued that actors are not solely responsible for historical research and creative direction, with many expressing sympathy over the level of backlash IU has received since the controversy emerged.

One of them wrote, “I am deeply hurt by what’s happening to iu right now. she doesn’t deserve all the hateful comments. she just had her birthday, and we should have been getting lots of bts pics from the final ep of perfect crown. instead, she posted an apology even though it wasnt her fault ,” while another commented, “Honestly, this isn’t the actors fault…we were so happy these past six weeks. I feel so bad…I will always support you! Hwaiting!”
