Trump’s Return to NYC for NBA Finals Game in Jeopardy After White House Plans to Spike ICE Agents in the City Ahead of Historic Event

President Donald Trump’s high-profile return to New York City for a historic NBA Finals matchup has been largely overshadowed by White House latest plans to dramatically increase the number of ICE agents operating in the city in a major move to speed up deportation process.

Tom Homan, the president’s border czar, said on Monday that New York City should expect a major surge in immigration enforcement, declaring that “you’re going to see more ICE than you’ve ever seen in New York City.” “It’s coming,” Homan told Fox News. “I just reviewed an operational plan. I’m not going to tell you exactly when it’s going to happen, but it’s coming.”

Homan said he had warned New York Governor Kathy Hochul about the planned enforcement push shortly before she signed legislation last month that bans ICE agents from wearing masks while operating in the state.

The law also restricts cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE and gives New Yorkers the ability to pursue legal action against federal officials they believe have violated immigration enforcement rules.

Senior Trump administration immigration officials have argued that ICE agents should focus on taking custody of migrants already being held in local jails, rather than conducting broader operations in neighborhoods and communities, such as those that drew controversy in Minneapolis and Los Angeles.

The planned increase in ICE activity comes as Trump is set to make a rare visit to his hometown on Monday night for Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is also expected to attend the game, though he said he would “be in a very different section of the stadium” from the president.

Game Already in Controversy

Trump’s planned appearance at the New York NBA Finals game has drawn criticism from some fans as Madison Square Garden ramps up security ahead of the president’s arrival. Many took to social media to complain about the extensive security measures surrounding the arena in Midtown Manhattan, with some describing the restrictions as excessive and accusing Trump of disrupting the city.

The New York-born president is expected to watch the game from an executive suite, while the New York Police Department and the Secret Service maintain a significant security presence around the venue.

It remains unclear when the administration plans to deploy the additional ICE agents that Homan has said will be sent to the city.

Trump’s visit comes just two months after an alleged assassination attempt targeting him at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and three weeks after a shooting incident near the White House.

Both Trump and Homan have previously warned that immigration enforcement operations in New York City could be expanded, although earlier threats to increase ICE activity did not materialize. The administration also faced strong criticism earlier this year over immigration enforcement actions in major urban areas.

Homan played a key role in negotiating the conclusion of the Homeland Security operation in Minneapolis earlier this year following the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Meanwhile, large demonstrations have continued for weeks outside an immigration detention facility in neighboring New Jersey, not far from New York City, as activists protest federal immigration policies.
