Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Cigarette Smoke’ Fuels Louis Partridge Breakup Speculation

American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo released her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, on June 12, prompting fans to comb through its lyrics for insights into the stories behind its songs.

One track in particular, “Cigarette Smoke,” has attracted widespread attention, with listeners speculating that the emotional ballad may reference Rodrigo’s reported split from English actor Louis Partridge.

Who is Louis Partridge?

Louis Patrick James Partridge, born on June 3, 2003, is an English actor who began his career as a child actor, with minor roles in the fantasy films Pan (2015) and Paddington 2 (2017). He went on to portray Piero de’ Medici in the historical drama series Medici (2019) before landing his career-defining role.

Partridge had his breakthrough with the Netflix mystery film Enola Holmes (2020) and its 2022 sequel and has since portrayed Sid Vicious in the FX miniseries Pistol (2022) and starred in Alfonso Cuarón’s thriller series Disclaimer (2024), as well as the historical drama House of Guinness (2025).

Rodrigo and Partridge, A Two-Year Romance

Rodrigo and Partridge first sparked dating rumors in late 2023. The pair were subsequently spotted together in New York City in December of that year, and Partridge was seen supporting the singer at both her iHeartRadio Jingle Ball appearance and her performance on Saturday Night Live.

The two kept their relationship relatively low-profile, the Sun reported.

“Dating probably shouldn’t be done in the public eye,” Partridge told British Vogue in a March 2024 profile. “There’s enough going on between two people. You don’t need the voices of thousands of others in your head.”

Despite keeping things private, the couple made their red carpet debut at the Venice International Film Festival premiere of Disclaimer in August 2024. Their last confirmed public appearance together was at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in November of that year.

The Reported Split and the Lyrics

Much of the breakup speculation centers on lyrical references that appear to connect “cigarette smoke” with other tracks on the album, including “honeybee” and “begged.” Fans have argued that the recurring imagery and themes suggest the songs were inspired by the same relationship.

The theory has gained additional attention because Rodrigo previously discussed drawing inspiration from her time in London. In an interview with British Vogue earlier this year, she said several songs on the album reflected experiences she had while living in the British capital. Partridge is based in London.

Still, the evidence remains circumstantial. Neither Rodrigo nor Partridge has publicly addressed reports that they ended their relationship, which several outlets said occurred in late 2025.

Rodrigo has never publicly named Partridge or any former partner as the subject of a specific song. The fan theories rest on lyrical cross-references, timing and circumstantial detail, not direct attribution.

The album is Rodrigo’s third full-length studio release, following SOUR and GUTS. She is set to promote the project on the Unraveled Tour, which begins Sept. 25, 2026, in Hartford, Connecticut, and runs through May 10, 2027, with a final show in London.
