Madden NFL 27 And Many Games Are Free on Xbox Without Game Pass Through Sept 13

Madden NFL 27 is free to play on Xbox through September 13, and you do not need a Game Pass subscription to play it during the promotion.

“EA Sports Madden NFL 27 is free for all Xbox members to try from September 10 until September 13,” Xbox Wire states, explicitly noting that an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential membership is not required.

But the offers are not the same: Madden NFL 27 gets full access for the weekend, while Dustborn is limited to a two-hour trial. The other four games require an eligible Game Pass subscription.

Game Title Access Level Game Pass Required? Highlights / Recent Content
Madden NFL 27 Full Access No Launched August 13; features the new Persona Engine, wide receiver/DB mechanics, and expanded Superstar progression.
Dustborn 2-Hour Trial No Timed trial paired with a limited-time discount; progress carries over upon full purchase.
Borderlands 4 Full Access Yes Overlaps with the debut of the new playable Vault Hunter, Loveless the Hacker.
F1 25: 2026 Season Edition Full Access Yes Includes recent updates featuring 2026 F2 season content and updated team liveries.
Surviving Mars: Relaunched Full Access Yes Follows the release of the Feeding the Future agricultural DLC.

Xbox lists Borderlands 4, F1 25: 2026 Season Edition, Surviving Mars: Relaunched and CarX Drift Racing Online under “Free Play Days (Game Pass Membership Required),” while Dustborn appears under “Free Play Days For All” with a two-hour trial.

Madden 27 Unleashes the “Persona Engine”

“It’s your league. Your next season starts now in EA SPORTS Madden NFL 27,” EA says, describing the game as powered by its “all-new Persona Engine.” EA’s Xbox announcement also confirms the game’s early-access trial began August 6.

EA has used Madden NFL 27 to introduce several changes, including its new Persona Engine. The system gives individual NFL players distinct personalities that influence how they behave and respond in Franchise mode.

The game also adds new wide receiver and defensive back interactions, changes to short-yardage situations and expanded Superstar progression. Players who have been following those changes but have not bought the game, the free weekend provides a chance to test them without committing to the full purchase price.

The timing is notable because annual sports games typically rely heavily on the first weeks after launch to attract players. Xbox and EA are putting Madden in front of a much wider audience less than four weeks after its release.

Dustborn’s Two-Hour Trap

“Dustborn will have a two-hour trial and discount from September 10 through September 13,” Xbox says in its Free Play Days announcement.

The offer is a two-hour trial, accompanied by a limited-time discount for anyone who decides to purchase the full game. Once the two-hour window expires, continued access requires a purchase.

That makes it substantially different from Madden’s offer even though both games can be played without a subscription during the promotion.

Four Games Need Game Pass

The remaining four titles are available to subscribers of eligible Game Pass plans. Borderlands 4 is the biggest release in that group and received a new playable character, Loveless the Hacker, on the same day the Free Play Days promotion began.

Surviving Mars: Relaunched also arrives during a recent content update. Its Feeding the Future DLC launched two days before the promotion and adds new farming and food-service buildings to the colony-management game.

F1 25: 2026 Season Edition has received a recent update adding 2026 F2 season content and new liveries. CarX Drift Racing Online rounds out the lineup with its focus on drifting, a large selection of cars and community-created tracks.

Xbox has not said that the timing of those updates was specifically coordinated with Free Play Days, so the overlap should not be treated as a confirmed promotional strategy.

How To Play

To find the games, open the Microsoft Store on Xbox and look under the Subscriptions section for the Free Play Days collection. Players can also search for individual titles through Xbox.com

For the four subscription-gated games, players need to be signed into an eligible Game Pass plan. Madden does not require Game Pass, although an Xbox account is still required.

“Purchase the game and other editions at a limited time discount and continue playing while keeping your Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event,” Xbox says. It also notes that discounts and title availability can vary by game and region.

The Free Play Days promotion ends Sunday, September 13. After that, Madden NFL 27 and Dustborn will require a purchase, while the other four games will return to their normal Game Pass access rules.

Xbox players curious about Madden NFL 27, the distinction is straightforward: this is a full free weekend for a game that launched less than a month ago. The rest of the lineup comes with either a subscription requirement or a much shorter trial.
