Helen Haines Attack: Donations to Children’s Charity Surpass AU$1 Million as MP’s Condition Improves

Donations to Save the Children Australia have surpassed AU$1 million in honour of independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines, as an outpouring of public support continues following the alleged attack that left her with life-changing injuries.

The fundraising milestone was confirmed on Saturday, Oct. 24, as Haines’ condition improved from critical to serious but stable, according to a statement from Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital. The donations reflect a nationwide response to the incident, with supporters contributing to a cause associated with the 65-year-old member of Parliament’s longstanding commitment to helping vulnerable communities.

Fundraising Campaign Draws Nationwide Support

Save the Children Australia confirmed that donations made in Haines’ honour had exceeded AU$1 million. The campaign was established to give Australians an opportunity to support the charity while expressing their concern and solidarity with the injured lawmaker.

According to the charity’s fundraising appeal, Haines and her family directed people wishing to send flowers or gifts toward donations supporting children in need. The appeal highlights her commitment to helping others and her longstanding interest in the welfare of vulnerable children.

Save the Children Australia chief executive Mat Tinkler said the organisation was moved by the generosity shown toward Haines and her family.

The charity said it would work closely with Haines and her family to ensure the funds support vulnerable children in the region and causes important to the lawmaker.

Community Support Extends Beyond Donations

The fundraising campaign has formed part of a broader show of solidarity across Haines’ electorate and Australia.

Floral tributes have been placed outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, while supporters gathered for a candlelight vigil in Wodonga. Colleagues and community members have also expressed their support for the lawmaker and her family.

Haines represents the federal electorate of Indi in Victoria and has served in Parliament since 2019. Her work has included advocacy for regional communities and improved access to essential services.

The response to the incident has also affected the people who work alongside her. In a social media update reported by The Guardian, Haines’ staff said many had witnessed the incident, while some were among the first to assist her.

The team said the incident had deeply affected Haines’ family and staff and acknowledged that recovery would take time. Staff members were also preparing to reopen the electorate offices, while allowing themselves time to support one another.

Hospital Reports Improvement in Haines’ Condition

The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne said on Saturday that Haines was in serious but stable condition, marking an improvement from the critical condition she had remained in since being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday, Oct. 19.

Haines sustained severe injuries in the incident, and surgeons amputated both her legs. Her husband, Phil Haines, had previously said that she remained alive and that her heart and mind were in good shape.

Police allege that the incident was deliberate. Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He has also faced separate cannabis-related charges, according to reports.

Donations Continue to Support Children’s Welfare

The fundraising campaign has given Australians a way to support a cause connected to Haines’ charitable interests while she remains in hospital.

Save the Children Australia has said the funds will support vulnerable children and causes important to Haines and her family. The campaign’s stated purpose is therefore broader than collecting messages of support for the injured lawmaker.

Although the reported donations have crossed AU$1 million, the latest confirmed report available for this article does not establish whether the total has subsequently risen or fallen. The fundraising figure should not be described as declining without a newer verified update.
