Why Is Cristiano Ronaldo Retiring From Portugal? What CR7 Said in Emotional Announcement

Cristiano Ronaldo will retire from Portugal’s national team after the November international break, ending his 23-year international career. The 41-year-old announced his decision in an emotional video on Thursday, saying it was time to pass the No. 7 shirt to the next generation.

Ronaldo leaves with 234 appearances and 146 goals, both men’s international records. His announcement follows a recent dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, although he did not cite it as the reason for his retirement.

Ronaldo Says It Is Time to Pass on Portugal’s No. 7 Shirt

In his farewell video, Ronaldo said he was ready to pass Portugal’s No. 7 shirt to the next generation, describing his decision as difficult.

“To the Portuguese people, the day has come for me to hand back the No. 7 shirt of our national team,” he said.

“It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” he added.

Ronaldo thanked supporters for standing by him throughout his international career, saying he hoped his goals had given them moments of happiness and pride. He concluded with a message of loyalty to his country: “Portugal will always be a part of me.”

Jorge Jesus Dispute Preceded Ronaldo’s Retirement Announcement

Ronaldo’s retirement announcement came weeks after a disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time. The forward was left unused against Norway and subsequently left the national team’s training camp on Sept. 30, after learning he would not start against Denmark.

Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking an agreement, prompting the Portuguese Football Federation to impose a 30-day suspension and a fine. He later apologized to supporters and said he remained available for national team selection.

On Oct. 27, AFP reported that Ronaldo was in line for a return to Portugal’s preliminary squad for the November Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. However, Ronaldo did not identify the dispute with Jesus as the reason for his retirement.

Ronaldo Leaves Portugal With 146 Goals and 234 Appearances

Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in August 2003 and went on to become the most-capped player and highest scorer in men’s international football. His 146 goals in 234 appearances set records that define his contribution to the national team.

As captain, he led Portugal to its first major international trophy at Euro 2016. He also helped the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

His international career spanned 23 years and included six World Cup appearances. Ronaldo’s achievements helped establish Portugal as a regular contender at major international tournaments.

Ronaldo’s Portugal Retirement Does Not End His Club Career

Ronaldo’s announcement concerns his international career and does not mean he is retiring from professional football altogether. The forward remains contracted to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, where he is expected to continue playing.

His departure from Portugal will bring an end to one of the longest and most decorated international careers in men’s football. While the No. 7 shirt will pass to another player, Ronaldo’s records and achievements will remain a significant part of Portugal’s football history.
