AI Deepfake Scandal Nearly Destroyed Korean Star hyun’s Career
- Kim Soo-hyun’s case became one of South Korea’s most high-profile controversies
- The scandal highlighted how AI-generated content can rapidly shape public opinion
- The investigation has intensified concerns about celebrity-targeted fake content
South Korean authorities have arrested a controversial YouTuber accused of using allegedly AI-generated evidence to spread false claims about actor Kim Soo-hyun, a scandal prosecutors say severely damaged one of the country’s biggest entertainment careers.
The Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday approved an arrest warrant for Kim Se-ui, operator of the YouTube channel Hover Lab, after investigators alleged he fabricated digital evidence connected to late actress Kim Sae-ron.
Police claim the YouTuber manipulated screenshots and used AI-generated audio to falsely accuse Kim Soo-hyun of dating Kim Sae-ron while she was still a minor, allegations the actor has repeatedly denied.
Allegations Surfaced After Kim Sae-ron’s Death
The controversy started several months after actress Kim Sae-ron took her life through suicide late last year, aged 24.
In the wake of her death, a South Korean YouTube channel called Hover Lab uploaded an audio clip in which Kim Sae-ron reportedly said that she had been dating the actor Kim Soo-hyun ever since middle school.
In addition to that, Hover Lab posted screenshots of text messages exchanged between the two actors, according to its report.
Within no time, the claims were viral in the social media networks of South Korea as well as entertainment media outlets, with Kim Soo-hyun being heavily criticized for the issue.

Police Allege AI Was Used to Manipulate Evidence
Investigators now claim the voice recording released by Hover Lab was generated using artificial intelligence technology.
Police also allege the channel altered screenshots of text messages to falsely suggest Kim Sae-ron had exchanged conversations with Kim Soo-hyun.
According to authorities, the alleged fabricated evidence played a major role in spreading the scandal online.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday outside the Seoul Central District Court before the arrest warrant decision, Kim Se-ui denied wrongdoing and criticized prosecutors’ case.
“The warrant did not even properly organise the basic facts,” Kim Se-ui told reporters Tuesday in Seoul.
He also said he planned to file complaints against police and prosecutors who sought his arrest.
Authorities said the arrest warrant was granted partly over concerns that evidence could be destroyed or that the YouTuber could flee during the investigation.
Kim Soo-hyun’s Career Was Thrown Into Crisis
The accusations have led to dire consequences for actor Kim Soo-hyun, who is considered one of South Korea’s best-paid actors on television and is globally famous through popular television series and extensive advertising deals.
Based on the statement by the police made to JoongAng Ilbo, “the allegations against him by Hover Lab brought down Kim Soo-hyun’s social base and his economic dealings in its entirety, and wiped out the foundation of his career.”
It has also been confirmed by police authorities that the actor continues to receive treatment at a mental health institution amidst the scandal.
Actor Kim Soo-hyun kept himself away from public scrutiny following a press conference held in March 2025, in which he denied dating the minor actress, Kim Sae-ron.
“I can’t admit to something I didn’t do,” Kim Soo-hyun said during the March 2025 press conference in Seoul. “I can’t admit to something I didn’t do,” Kim Soo-hyun said during the March 2025 press conference in Seoul.
Agency Says “Truth Has Been Proven”
Following Tuesday’s arrest decision, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency released a statement on Wednesday saying investigators had confirmed the allegations against the actor were false.
“The investigation confirmed that all suspicions and evidence raised by Hover Lab against Kim Soo-hyun were unfounded,” the agency said in a statement released Wednesday.
The agency also referenced Kim Soo-hyun’s March 2025 press conference.
“At a press conference a year ago, Kim Soo-hyun promised, ‘I won’t ask you to believe me. I will definitely prove myself,'” the statement said. “The past year has been solely dedicated to keeping that promise.”
The case has since become one of South Korea’s most high-profile alleged AI deepfake scandals, intensifying concerns over how manipulated digital evidence and viral online accusations can rapidly damage public figures before claims are fully verified.
