The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly among the teams monitoring Jonathan Kuminga as free agency gathers pace, viewing the athletic forward as a potential cornerstone for the franchise’s next chapter following the departure of LeBron James.
Kuminga became one of the biggest names available on the market after the Atlanta Hawks declined his $24.3 million team option for the 2026-27 season, making the 23-year-old unrestricted. According to multiple reports, the Lakers have emerged as one of several franchises evaluating whether they can create the financial flexibility required to pursue the former lottery pick.
The reported interest is significant for Los Angeles as the franchise enters a new era built around Luka Dončić. With James no longer on the roster, the Lakers are looking to surround Dončić with younger, athletic players capable of contributing immediately while also fitting into the team’s long-term plans. Kuminga’s age, versatility and untapped potential make him an attractive option in that regard.
Selected seventh overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga entered the league as one of basketball’s most gifted young athletes. Standing 6-foot-8 with elite explosiveness and the ability to defend multiple positions, he was widely viewed as a future two-way star. However, his development in Golden State was often overshadowed by the franchise’s championship ambitions, with inconsistent minutes making it difficult for him to establish a permanent role.

Although no agreement appears imminent, the Lakers’ pursuit reflects a broader organizational shift.
