TAIWAN Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has restored operations at factories it evacuated after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the island’s south, injuring at least four people.
The world’s largest chipmaker said all affected sites are gradually resuming production and support systems from power to water are functioning normally. The company however is continuing to inspect sites and assess the impact from the suspensions, it said.
Taiwan is the source of much of the world’s advanced semiconductors, where contract manufacturers such as TSMC fabricate chips for Nvidia, Apple and other global tech firms.
Taiwan’s largest company had moved workers out of some plants located in the island’s central and southern regions in the aftermath of the temblor. The factories are structurally sound and all employees were safe, it added.
TSMC’s smaller rival, United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), said it too cleared out factories, though it saw no significant losses. The company is also inspecting those facilities and evaluating the state of its chipmaking tools, UMC said. BLOOMBERG
